With sales of South African apples and pears winding down in Western Europe, one exporter is far from through with the South African sales season. Betko, located near Villiersdorp in the Western Cape, says it will continue supplying customers in West Africa until the middle of December.

"Our Golden Delicious is extremely popular with customers in West Africa," says Roux Groenewald, Betko's Marketing Director. "We have been represented in this region for many years and although every exporter into Africa will tell you that it is not easy to work in this region, we are doing extremely well. Our sales in countries such as Angola, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria are growing year on year."

He says Betko have been doing direct business with receivers in West Africa for more than 11 years. "We have built up excellent relationships and our customers understand our business and we make sure we deliver from our side."

Mr Groenwald says although Betko will only conclude its last sales in the middle of December, the company is already preparing for the new harvest of early Bon Chretien which will start early in January. Part of the plans for the new season includes expansion into northern European countries to further consolidate the company's marketing and distribution base in Europe.

Mr Groenwald has also recently returned from visiting clients in Portugal and Italy. "We are very pleased with progress in these countries and can only see our business expanding in both countries with the help of our very commited recievers."
