With the South African apple harvest moving into its final weeks, Betko says it is concluding a harvest of excellent quality.
“We have a bigger crop than last year and is very pleased with the eating quality and taste which confirms that this is a vintage harvest,” says Roux Groenewald, Marketing Director.
Mr Groenewald says only Pink Lady-Cripps Pink is still being harvested on Betko’s farms near Villiersdorp and Riviersonderend in the Cape region. “The packing season will, however, continue until October with the last fruit being sold overseas in November.”
He says the European market has been particularly strong with markets in the Far east being unable to match the return achieved in Europe. “The European crops are selling out earlier than usual and the markets in Europe are relatively empty, hence the increased demand.”
He says it is inevitable that volumes to the Far East will be affected under these circumstances. “Despite the current situation, we are again seeing a strengthening of relationships with customers outside Europe.”
Mr Groenewald also says Betko is very pleased with the developed of its sales in the African market. “Africa remains a fast growing market and we have been involved there for many years. It is not easy but we have built good relations and are now picking the fruits of our labour.”
Betko’s shipments to Europe will continue till July but supplies to other regions will continue until late in the year.
